Every function of your body (every moment of your life) is coordinated and controlled by your miraculous brain and your nervous system.

Your spine and your skull protect much of your nervous system.

The adult spinal column consists of 24 freely moveable bone segments called vertebra, the sacrum and the coccyx. Nerve trunks pass through openings between each vertebra. Vital nerve force or information is carried by these nerve trunks between the brain, the organs, muscles and tissues.

A misalignment of a spinal vertebra (AKA a subluxation) can interfere with the transmission of vital nerve information to or from the brain. A misalignment of the bones in the skull can interfere with that relay of information.

Your muscles and bones form your physical structure.
Muscles move bones and muscles hold bones in place.

A weak muscle can cause pain and spasm.

It also allows a bone to move slightly out of place (a subluxation). This can cause joint inflammation (AKA arthritis or osteoarthritis) and can damage joints and surrounding tissue (AKA degenerative joint disease). When these misalignments or subluxations are long standing, they create degeneration of the spine and its discs, an uncomfortable and painful malady.

This is NOT a normal part of aging
and it is beneficially affected by Chiropractic.

Irritation in the spine or elsewhere in the body or the musculoskeletal structure can result in an imbalance in the flow of information to the brain, the nerves, the blood vessels, the lymphatic system, the organs, and the energy meridians. This can cause discomfort and disturb normal function anywhere in the body or it can cause a systemic response of stress and/or inflammation throughout the body that may result in vague health complaints and fatigue.

This degenerative process can be halted by proper Chiropractic "adjustments" that remove nerve pressures and allow the vital nerve force or information to reach the dis-eased parts of your body.

Nerve pressures or subluxations are like "static" to your nervous system.
Your body must use precious energy to deal with it. Removing irritation and pressure permits the restoration of health and energy to flow back into the affected areas.

I use a bright colored card so people can check to see how their brain health is. Close one eye and look at the card, repeat this process with the other eye. Is there a difference in color or brightness from one eye to the other? Turn your head in one direction as far as you can and in the other. Is there a difference in the range of motion between the two sides or do you experience pain in either direction? Do you experience pain in any direction of any motion or is your motion restricted? Is one ear higher than the other? Is one shoulder higher than the other? Do you usually tilt your head a little in one direction to read? Is one hip higher than another? Are you achy in the morning when you get up? Do you get achy as the day progresses? Any of these simplistic tests will tell you if you need a wholistic Chiropractor.

HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE

"Why Homeopathy?"

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that looks at the complete being with a spirit and a soul as well as the physical and emotional body.

Unfortunately in this culture we have been trained in the medical model to look at the body primarily from a biochemical standpoint and to just view the sickened area. Usually we don't even look at the body until it is sick. We don't know what to do if there are no frank symptoms of pain or discomfort. Most often medicine looks at the kidney or the liver and forgets about the rest of the person.

Sometimes a homeopathic remedy will create an emotional shift in a person, sometimes it is used to create a physical shift.

Homeopathic medicine is based on the Law of Similars.
This law has been verified experimentally and clinically for the last 200 years.

As an example: If your child accidentally ingests certain poisons, you may be advised to administer Syrup of Ipecac to induce vomiting. Ipecac is derived from the root of a South American plant called Ipecacuanha. The name, in the native language, means "the plant by the road which makes you throw up." Eating the plant causes vomiting. When a group of healthy volunteers took this substance to determine the effects of this drug, they found that the drug induced other symptoms as well. The mouth retained much saliva.
The tongue was very clean. There was a cough so severe that it led to gagging and vomiting. There was incessant nausea. While it is expected that vomiting would usually relieve the nausea, this was not the case.

Such an experiment, using healthy volunteers, is called a proving. It is the homeopath's source of information about how the drug works or the action of a drug, AND of what this plant could be used for. If a person were suffering from a gagging cough after a cold, or a woman were experiencing morning sickness with incessant nausea that is not relieved by vomiting, then Ipecacuanha, administered in a minute dose, specially prepared by a homeopathic pharmacy in accordance with FDA approved guidelines, can allay the "similar" suffering.

Samuel Hahnemann, the creator of modern homeopathy, described this principle by using a Latin phrase: Similia Similibus Curentur, which translates: "Let likes cure likes." This is a principle that has been known and used for centuries.

Homeopathic medicines work well for a wide variety of both acute and chronic conditions. The proper remedy can help with an acute sprain and strains, broken bones, earaches, sore throats, colds or flus. They can also help with chronic problems such as hormonal problems, in some cases even fertility, carpal tunnel, Bell's Palsy, eczema, ADD, depression, or arthritis.

Sometimes more than one remedy is necessary over a period of time as the "symptoms" begin to change. This necessitates follow-up in a case.

When we are sick, homeopathic medicines stimulate the body
to get on with the business of healing.

Let's take another example: the common cold.

First, we must accept that all symptoms, no matter how uncomfortable they are, represent the body's attempt to restore itself to health. Instead of looking upon the symptoms as something wrong which must be set right, we see them as signs of the way the body is attempting to help itself.

Instead of trying to stop a cold with suppressants, as conventional medicine does, a homeopath will give a remedy that will cause a cold in a healthy person. The body's reaction to the stimulus (the remedy) is the healing. The homeopathic remedy (hopefully) stimulates the body to restore itself.

Second, we must look at the totality of the symptoms presented. We each experience a cold in our unique way. Conventional medicine acts as if all colds were alike. It offers a series of drugs to suppress the cough, something to dry up the mucus, something to lower the histamine level, something to ease falling asleep.

Homeopathy, on the other hand, looks for that one substance that will cause similar symptoms in a healthy person. The person with a cough characterized by being worse when breathing cold air, and sounding like a deep bark, will need a different remedy than the person whose cough is loose in the morning, dry in the evening, and better when sitting up in bed. We characterize both as "coughs" but to a homeopath they are very different illnesses which require different homeopathic treatment.

There are several homeopathic remedies that may be considered in cases of coughs, colds and flu: Aconite or wolf's bane, is thought of in any case in which the symptoms come on suddenly, especially if exposure to cold might be a causative factor. There could be a cough or sneezing, but the main guiding point is the suddenness of the onset. Mentally, the person is fearful - afraid he will die - he is overcome by the suddenness of the attack. A child, out playing in the snow, awakens screaming at 2 a.m. (a common time reference for this remedy) with a cough and high fever; or a man, out shoveling snow, suddenly comes down with a high fever and is fearful he will die; both call for Aconite.

Another remedy characterized by suddenness of onset is Belladonna, the deadly nightshade. Symptoms are characterized by redness and heat. Fever is high, the face is flushed, the pulse can be seen in the veins of the neck. The eyes are dilated. The person is sensitive to slight movement and noise. (Many old time doctors, when seeing a suspected case for Belladonna, would bump against the bed to see if the patient was sensitive to this slight movement.) Sometimes the patient is delirious and sees monsters. The throat is usually swollen, the glands are swollen, and the ear might be involved. For most acute children's earaches, Belladonna would be the first remedy of which one would think especially if the ache is throbbing and on the right side.

Conventional medical thought sees health as the absence of symptoms.
You assume that you are healthy if there is nothing wrong with you. To a homeopath, health is much more than that.

A healthy person is a person who is free on all levels: physical, emotional, and mental.

Obviously, a person with a broken leg is not free, on the physical level, to move around. But on a more subtle level, a person who cannot eat certain foods or is allergic to certain materials is also experiencing a lack of freedom.

While it is a good emotional release to cry at a "tear jerker" movie, someone who continues to cry for several weeks afterwards is experiencing a lack of freedom on the emotional level.

Likewise, a person who cannot absorb what he has read or cannot remember day to day appointments is experiencing a restriction on the mental level.

A homeopath recognizes such limitations and attempts, through the use of the properly selected remedies, to restore the person to health and freedom.

An important basic difference exists between conventional medical therapy and homeopathy. In conventional therapy, the aim often is to control the illness through the regular use of medical substances, even if the medication is nothing more than vitamins.

If the medication is withdrawn, however, the person returns to illness.
There has been no cure.

A person who takes a pill for high blood pressure every day is not undergoing a cure but is only controlling the symptoms. Homeopathy's aim is the cure: "The complete restoration of perfect health," as Dr. Samuel Hahneman said.

What are Homeopathic Medicines?

Homeopathy is a system of health care founded by Dr. Samuel Hahanamann, an M. D. who practiced in the late 18th century. Even then, there was an abundance of toxic dugs and procedures used by the medical profession with dangerous side effects.

Dissatisfied with the dangers of the drugs of the times, he felt that the damage they wrecked on patients was somehow unnecessary. His work led to the development of a wonderful, very gentle method of helping to heal the body, mind and spirit.

Homeopathic medicines are non-toxic "drug" products made by homeopathic pharmacies in accordance with the processes described in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States, the official manufacturing manual recognized by the FDA.

The substances may be made from plants such as aconite, dandelion, plantain; from minerals such as iron phosphate, arsenic oxide, sodium chloride; from animals such as the venom of a number of poisonous snakes, or the ink of the cuttlefish; or even from chemical drugs such as penicillin or streptomycin. These substances are diluted carefully until little of the original remains. A plant substance, for example, is mixed in alcohol to obtain a tincture.

One drop of the tincture is mixed with 99 drops of alcohol (to achieve a ratio of 1:100) and the mixture is strongly shaken or hit against the hand or a book. This shaking process is known as succussion. The final bottle is labeled as "1C." One drop of this 1C is then mixed with 99 drops of alcohol and the process is repeated to make a 2C. By the time the 3C is reached, the dilution is 1 part in 1 million! Small globules made from sugar are then saturated with the liquid dilution. These globules constitute the homeopathic medicine. Although such infinitesimal quantities are considered by some to be no more than placebos, the clinical experience of homeopathy shows that the infinitesimal dose is effective: it works upon unconscious people and infants, it even works on animals. It is important to remember, however, that a medicine is homeopathic only if it is taken based upon the similar nature of the medicine to the illness. A medicine labeled as "homeopathic" will work only if it is homeopathic to the symptoms presented. In any case it will do no harm.

Homeopathy was brought to the United States (beginning in 1825) by several doctors who had studied in Europe. They, in turn, converted other doctors to homeopathic practice. Slowly schools were established, and a medical organization was formed. By the mid-1800's, several medical colleges existed that taught homeopathy, including the New England Female Medical College, the first medical school in the U.S. to admit women. At the turn of the century there were 22 homeopathic medical colleges, and one out of five doctors used homeopathy. But the move toward a mechanical model of the body and of disease pushed homeopathy into the background. By 1910 only 15 colleges remained. By the late 40's, no courses in homeopathy were taught in the U.S. The American Foundation for Homeopathy began to teach homeopathy as a post-graduate course for doctors in 1922, and the courses, now run by the National Center for Homeopathy, have continued to this day. The present day resurgence of homeopathy is slowly bringing homeopathy back to its place in the medical care system in our country.

The manufacture and sale of homeopathic medicines is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. The Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States was written into federal law in 1938 under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, making the manufacture and sale of homeopathic medicines legal in this country. Most homeopathic remedies are available without a prescription. Some states regulate the practice of homeopathy. Usually, it can be employed legally by those whose degree entitles them to practice medicine in that state. This includes MD's, DO's (Doctors of Osteopathy), ND. (Doctors of Naturopathy), DDS. (Dentists), and DVM's (Veterinarians). and DC's (Doctors of Chiropractic). Although the practice of medicine is regulated under law, the use of homeopathic medicines for self care of acute ailments is still available to all, and those who keep a homeopathic kit in their house for domestic emergencies, are free, under the laws of most states, to use them in such situations.

NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE

Naturopathic Medicine is founded on a holistic philosophy that combines safe and effective traditional therapies with the most current advances in modern medicine. Naturopathic Medicine is appropriate for the management of a broad range of health conditions affecting all people of all ages.

Naturopathic physicians (N.D.s) are some of the highest trained practitioners in the broadest scope of naturopathic medical modalities. In addition to the basic medical sciences and conventional diagnostics, naturopathic education includes as does Chiropractic, therapeutic nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, natural childbirth, classical Chinese medicine, hydrotherapy, manipulative therapy, pharmacology and minor surgery.

Modern agricultural techniques, stressful lifestyles, and environmental pollution have created much greater nutritional needs for all individuals. Extensively trained to recognize vitamin and mineral deficiencies as well as the possible therapeutic indications for high doses of vitamins and minerals, naturopathic physicians commonly use nutritional supplements to treat functional and pathological disorders. Naturopathic physicians also have extensive training in metabolic cofactors essential to enzymatic pathways. NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT

This age of high stress, low quality, highly processed foods has fostered illness and dis-ease in over half of our population.

90% of the money Americans spend on foods goes towards processed, dead foods. Yearly enough soda is produced in this country to provide 557 - 12 ounce cans of soda - 52.4 gallons - for every man, woman and child. Carbonated soft drinks are the single biggest source of calories in the American diet, providing about 7 percent of calories; adding in noncarbonated drinks brings the figure to 9 percent. Teenagers get 13 percent of their calories from carbonated and noncarbonated soft drinks. Soda pop provides the average 12- to 19-year-old boy with about 15 teaspoons of refined sugars a day and the average girl with about 10 teaspoons a day. Those amounts roughly equal the government's recommended limits for teens' sugar consumption from all foods. Daily we drink enough soda and eat enough candy and other sugars to account for 52 teaspoons of added sugar -WAY OVER ONE CUP OF SUGAR daily for every man, woman and child in America.

It takes nutrients to metabolize the sugars and other additives in these products. The necessary metabolic nutrients are rarely supplied by any of these "foods". The body must steal them from where ever it can get them.

Many of us are living on counterfeit convenience foods and fast foods;
many are unknowingly suffering from our poor eating habits.
(What about adding something to build you up rather than tear you down?)

We are all toxic! We are constantly exposed to a myriad of chemicals dumped into our soils, our foods, and our systems from the air we breathe, the water we drink, the "silver" fillings in our teeth, the products we use and the foods we eat.

Pollutants interfere with enzyme pathways that over time create cellular malfunctions leading to fatigue, discomfort and dis-ease. Conditions that do not come from some virus or bacteria. Foods grown on mineral deficient soils, and animals raised on plants grown on mineral deficient soils, cause us to suffer from the lack of those specific minerals.

Today you would have to eat 75 bowls of spinach to get the amount of iron available in one bowl just 60 years ago. You would have to eat 10 slices of bread to get the protein available in just one slice a century ago.

Crops grown on depleted soils produce malnourished bodies.
Fatigue, pain, illness and disease preys on weakened malnourished tissue.

These are all modern day diseases showing up in younger segments of our population - most are linked to the foods we eat.

When we don't feel well, we run to the doctor to be fixed. We don't ask:
"Why is it that I don't feel well?"

SOMETIMES THE BEST MEDICINE IS NO MEDICINE AT ALL!

A study in the September 2000 issue of Prescription Drug Trends, found that 12 new prescriptions are written every year for every person in the United States.

Almost a quarter of a million people (243,000) are hospitalized yearly because of prescription drug reactions.

A study reported in the U.S. News and World Report found there are over four hundred deaths daily from the side effects of prescription medications. To put this into perspective, this is the equivalent of the crash of two fully loaded 747 aircraft every day of the year killing everyone on board!

This makes prescription drugs the
third leading cause of death in the United States.

Yearly 50,000+ Americans over 50 contract Parkinson's syndrome as a side effect of prescription antipsychotics like Stelazine or Haldol;
another 32,000 suffer hip fractures because of drug-induced falls;
164,000 more suffer from drug-induced memory loss or impaired thinking.

We are spending billions on disease management focused on drugs. People reason if they weren't safe, the government wouldn't allow them. (Have you noticed the number of miracle drugs pulled from the market yearly because of the dangerous and profound side effects? - see Vioxx Took a Deadly Toll)

Take an example of some of the popular over the counter drugs. Many take these drugs daily. The media would like us to believe an aspirin a day can save your life by reducing your chances of a heart attack or stroke. Aspirin may slightly reduce your chances of one type of stroke, BUT it increases the likelihood of another! AND according to a study in the Journal of Ophthalmology, daily aspirin can increase your risk of age-related macular degeneration (a major cause of blindness in the elderly) AND it can increase your risk of cataracts by up to 44% (bad odds).

Medical and pharmaceutical conglomerates make no profit on you when you are healthy and well!

Research shows that Tylenol (acetaminophen) taken with just three alcoholic drinks can lead to liver disease or even liver failure, necessitating a liver transplant!!

We can't drug ourselves into health. If we could, we would all be healthy by now. Drugs do not feed our body on any level; your body must steal the nutrients necessary to metabolize them.

ARE YOU DIGGING YOUR GRAVE WITH YOUR TEETH?

Everything you put in, on and around your body; everything you eat, drink and think affects your health, often in destructive and unforeseen ways. This is especially true of the foods you eat and the liquids we drink.

Researchers at Harvard now say that trans-fats in processed foods cause more than 30,000 deaths yearly from heart disease.

Do you read the labels on the foods you eat? How many of them say "partially hydrogenated"? Partially-hydrogenated trans-fats were linked by research to cancer and heart disease over 15 years ago.

A nitroglycerine tab under the tongue may give you relief from angina, but it doesn't treat the cause of the pain. Reducing your refined sugar and carbohydrate intake and adding a specific high selenium yeast to your diet will eliminate the pain, AND help correct the underlying nutritional deficiency.

MANY CONDITIONS WE HAVE COME TO THINK OF AS DISEASES AND AGING ARE NOT DISEASES OR AGING AT ALL, THEY ARE SYMPTOMS CAUSED BY THE UNDERLYING PROBLEM OF
MALNUTRITION!

Our medical community is not trained and equipped to notice or even treat anunderlying state of malnutrition. Our underlying states of malnutrition need to be treated with food not drugs!

When you treat your symptoms without correcting the underlying problem, you may get temporary relief, but you will never get well. Often you will get worse with time. Sometimes the medications you are taking cause side effects that demand more and different medications. The vicious circle starts!

When you are having problems with your gallbladder, often your doctor will remove it instead of finding out why it's malfunctioning. Then, after surgery, a patient sadly discovers the symptoms are still there. (Stop gall bladder attacks in 48 hours by drinking ½ a glass of beet juice with every meal or taking a particular dietary supplement.)

You may get temporary relief from heartburn or indigestion by taking antacids, but your problem will usually get worse over time. "Indigestion" covers a wide range of conditions involving the digestive system: heartburn, acid reflux, GERD, colitis, diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis, leaky gut, and Crohn's disease. Conventional treatments focus on controlling symptoms, not correcting the underlying cause.

More than 50 million pills are ingested daily for indigestion.

As the stomach produces less acid, the pancreas produces fewer digestive enzymes. Food remains undigested in your digestive tract, starting a vicious cycle of pain and deteriorating health. The undigested food begins to rot and ferment. This attracts water from the body into the intestines, producing gas and caustic acids that irritate, damage, and eventually destroy the delicate intestinal linings.
